What does “Board Certified”mean?

A urologist who is “Board Certified” must have received a minimum of 5 years of urology residency training at an approved program followed by passing a rigorous two part testing program. This process is administered by an organization called the American Board of Urology. Applicants who successfully complete the process are known as “Board Certified” or more formally as Diplomates of the American Board of Urology. Every two years, a urologist must complete a program called maintenance of certification in order to remain Board Certified. All of the surgeons at Urology Associates are Board Certified.

What does “FACS” mean?

“FACS” stands for Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. The FACS designation is often referred to as “Advanced Certification” or “Fellowship Status”. In order to apply for Fellowship Status, a urologist must first become Board Certified. Patient care logs and surgical logs are then submitted for review. Finally, each candidate must participate in a series of personal interviews. Fellowship status is considered the highest level of achievement that a surgeon can attain. Several of the surgeons at Urology Associates have either acquired or are in the process of acquiring Fellowship status.
