Recent advances in laser technology have revolutionized prostate surgery by improving patient outcomes while minimizing hospital stays. This is particularly true of the “Greenlight” or PVP – laser prostate procedure. This new laser procedure has several advantages over the standard prostate resection procedure. The most important advantage is control of prostate bleeding. The laser works by creating energy with such intense heat that the prostate tissue is literally vaporized and melts back, away from the laser fiber which then opens the urethral channel. The remaining prostate blood vessels are then coagulated or sealed off by the intense heat. As there is minimal bleeding with this procedure, it can almost always be done on an outpatient basis while the traditional TURP method usually requires one to two days in the hospital.
Patients may return to normal physical activities, including sexual relations, within a few days. This laser procedure is an excellent choice for patients who require long-term use of anti-coagulation medications such as aspirin, plavix and coumadin. It is also an excellent surgical procedure for patients whose prostate symptoms have not improved with medications such as Cardura, Hytrin, Flomax, Uroxatral, Proscar or Avodart.
The Greenlight laser procedure should only be used to treat irritative and obstructive voiding symptoms due to prostate enlargement. This procedure cannot be used to cure prostate cancer.
